WAGON AND CONSIGNMENT TRACKING
AND TRACING SYSTEM
STATUS - on-going
The purpose of the RailTrack project is to cover railway transportation from the European Union to Russia and to serve as a centralised data base to administrate and monitor all information related to wagon and customer consignments.
Combined transport is a growing sector in the railway business. In this mode of transport, the goods are carried in one loading unit whether transported by rail, road or sea. RailTrack services all these modes and means of transport. It manages consignment information from its origin to the ultimate place of delivery, monitoring the movement and status of both the vehicle and the consignment.
Frequent information exchange minimises risks of loss and gives an option of security services - RailTrack is a missing link in Western European consignment tracking.
RailTrack is an information system that integrates and disseminates delivery management information from third parties. Such parties may be Finnish Railways (VR) and other European railways, logistics service companies and other community tracking systems. Waybill information from railway wagons, multimodal transportation and container consignments provided by these parties can be processed in RailTrace, and information can be disseminated globally by using the latest Internet techniques.
As a result of the RailTrack project a RailTrace Service http://www.railtrace.com was created. This service system covers all railway transports in Finland.
- RailTrack service covering Finnish railway traffic is ready and in use within Finland.
- Expansion to the Eastern railway traffic started with data specifications agreed with the the Russian railways. The test messages exchange started already in the end of 2003 and testing of real-time messages was staterted in the beginning of 2004.
- Expansion to Western railway traffic negotiations are going on with various partners.
- The real-time status message exchange on selected pilot routes Mukkala - St.Petersburg and the TransSiberian route from Nahodka to and from Finland have been tested
